Annually between
February 1 and April 15 the Samaritan Center conducts an assistance
program for persons eligible for the State Senior Citizen Property Tax
Credit.
The goal is to
assist seniors and disabled persons in increasing their income by
receiving this tax credit.
Persons who pay real estate property
tax or rent on their home who are residents of Missouri during the tax
year and who are over 65 as of the end of the year may be eligible to
apply. Also, persons who are under 65 years of age but who are 100%
disabled, or over 60 and receiving surviving spouse social security
benefits are eligible to apply. If you are single, your annual income
from all sources must be $25,000 or less or $27,000 or less, if married.
The amount of tax credit
received will depend on income and will range up to a maximum of
$750.00.
Samaritan Center
publicizes and promotes the program through flyers to clients,
PowerPoint slides, inquiry of potentially eligible clients when they go
through intake. Also newsletter articles, press releases, etc. are
addressed to the public. A mailing is made to all pastors in the
community.
If a client is
eligible for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit or the state Property
(& Renters) Tax Credit, they must apply for these credits or else they
will not be eligible for cash type assistance (for example, utility
assistance) from the Samaritan Center. They will be eligible for food,
clothing, medical and other non-cash assistance. This policy became
effective on February 15, 2004.
Volunteer aides
are recruited to work with clients in the preparation of their claims.
During the intake process clients are scheduled for an appointment with
an aide and given written instructions as to what to bring to the
appointment.
