The Letter
Carriers each year collect more than 29,000 pounds of non perishable food
on the first or second Saturday of May. The Samaritan Center is the
recipient of the collections from the letter carriers in Cole county and
occasionally part of Callaway. A post card is mailed to every postal
customer a few days before the pick up date, requesting food items to be
placed in a plastic bag next to the mailbox on the following Saturday.
The letter carrier then goes by with volunteers following in trucks and
gets the food along with the mail. They then bring it to the Samaritan
Center where volunteers are waiting to sort and weigh the items. In 2007
we used about 122 volunteers. Volunteers are asked to arrive around 11:00
and the day lasts through 5:00 p.m.
