Our Opinion
Help stuff the truck with food

Most area students are eagerly anticipating summer break.

Perhaps the only thing they will miss will be the prepared meals provided by their schools.

Although it may not be readily apparent, hunger is a problem in Central Missouri. The Samaritan Center serves more than 1,100 families each month.

Area residents who would like to help are encouraged to participate by helping to fill a tractor trailer with food.

Called “Stuff a Truck,” patrons at Hy-Vee, 3721 W. Truman Blvd., may purchase prepackaged bags of pantry items. A $10 bag contains two cans of vegetables, a can of soup, macaroni and cheese, cereal and diapers. A $5 bag contains baby wipes, peaches, peanut butter and noodles.

The bags then will be loaded into a full-size trailer parked on the lot. The trailer has been donated by Chet Jac Industries.

The collection will continue through Memorial Day, May 29.

Stuff a Truck, combined with the Letter Carriers Food Drive earlier this month, is critical to the Samaritan Center's ability to feed needy people during the summer.
