Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 04:13:30 pm CDT Our Opinion Paper or plastic? The preferred option for Saturday will be leather, as in the satchels toted by area letter carriers. The annual Letter Carriers Food Drive to benefit the Samaritan Center in Jefferson City will held Saturday. Area residents are asked to place non-perishable food items in non-glass containers in a bag by their mailboxes. A special need this time of year is food children can make on their own, since many will be without the school lunch program during the summer. Suggested foods include meats in a can, macaroni and cheese, cereal, tuna, and peanut butter and jelly. Marylyn DeFeo, volunteer executive director of the Samaritan Center, said the Letter Carriers Food Drive is the largest food drive each year. “It's very important,” she said, because it helps the Samaritan Center feed area children during the summer months. “Kids are often home alone in the summer while Mom and Dad are at work,” she added. “Most people don't realize how many hungry children there are.” Central Missourians, without even leaving their homes, can help nourish area children. Simply leave a bag of food near your mailbox Saturday. Your contribution will be appreciated. | |
