Support the food drive

Many people associate hunger with winter, as in "cold and hungry."

Hunger, however, is not seasonable and can be particularly problematic for children in summer.

Why? Because school lunches, and sometimes breakfasts, are not available to children during the summer recess from school. Several excellent programs provide meals for youngsters during the summer months, but they don't always reach all needy children.

Although the image of families gathered for meals is a comforting concept, some parents are unavailable or unable to cook and serve family meals.

Thankfully, the Samaritan Center -- an ecumenical food bank supported by numerous volunteers, churches, organizations and businesses -- provides food to needy Central Missourians.

U.S. Postal Service letter carriers this Saturday will be conducting their annual food drive to replenish the shelves at the Samaritan Center.

Donors are asked to place non-perishable food items in bags and place them by their mailboxes before 9 a.m. Suggested items include cereal, soup, macaroni and cheese, and peanut butter and jelly.

The letter carriers' food drive offers a convenient opportunity to help feed your Central Missouri neighbors, including needy children.
