Thursday, Mar 04, 2004 - 03:24:26 pm CST Editorial Boy Scouts across Missouri will be putting their slogan, "Do a Good Turn Daily," into practice Saturday during the annual Scouting for Food drive. Scouts of all ages, including Cub Scouts and adult leaders, will be going door-to-door during the morning to collect non-perishable food items that will restock shelves of area food banks. Food collected in the Jefferson City area benefits the Samaritan Center and the Central Missouri Food Bank. Marylyn DeFeo, the Samaritan Center's volunteer director, said the drive plays a critical role in replenishing the center's supply. "This is our only major food drive until May," she said. "We hope that people are generous enough to carry us through the next couple of months." The need, she said, is ongoing and growing. Each month 870 families come to the center for food and since January 234 new families also have asked for assistance. Donations can be made by simply placing items in the plastic bag Scouts distributed to area residences last weekend and then putting the filled bag by the front door by 9 a.m. Scouts will pick up the bags by noon and take them to the Samaritan Center. Consider making a donation and help the Scouts help others while doing your own "good turn." | |
